Thoughts for A Ghost of a Chance

Okay I'm thinking of using this for a future bit of my Cleanser Dean fic, or maybe in A Ghost of a Chance, or maybe even something completely different.

Okay you know the belief that the more love that a person places into an object the more of a soul it develops?

Well what if way back when, someone, a fighter, had a weapon, sword, gun whatever, that they loved and used a lot. They lead a rather violent life, and as such they took very good care of the one thing they could trust to save their life.

Time goes on and a strong connection has formed between weapon and wielder.

Now here's where it goes screwy. Someone the person had trusted murders them with their own weapon.

This would lead not only to a majorly pissed off ghost, but also a majorly pissed off weapon. Time passes and the weapon develops a reputation for being cursed/causing bad luck.

Anyway eventually the Winchesters/whoever comes across this weapon. Can you see them having major problems with, sympathy for, the weapon and ghost?

'Cause thinking on it, it is a situation/curse that was made through one of the worst sorts of betrayals. Also the fact that it would hit a little close to home.

Anyway, I haven't had a good bunny, of just how to use this yet, but I thought I should share the with ya'll to see if it makes sense/anyone likes it.

I think I've thought of a reason for Harry to find trouble the way he does. It's going to take a little explanation so bear with me.

I'm planning (though I don't know how to bring it up) that the Winchesters are actually an old pureblood line. The Salem Institute (I think that's canon HP 'verse) pretty much takes students from the west coast of the US all the way to the continental divide over there. Then on the Pacific coast I'm going to have it that they also have a Salem Institute, mostly because there is a Salem Oregon and I like the thought of them being referred to as "the twin Salem's". And they get students all the way east to their continental divide.

Now in the vast area in between I'm going to have where there's no very big school's except for in a couple states like Texas or Illinois. So you end up with wizarding settlers with no established schools to send their children to so they end up teaching their children themselves or occasionally setting up a school.

Pretty much John had been taught by his parents, and he taught Sam and Dean (though they only had one wand between them) but they really don't use that kind of magic much, because it's not exactly helpful in their jobs.

Okay, does that make sense? About the wizarding situation in the US anyway? And I'm also thinking that the European (especially English) wizarding community has no real idea of just how big the US is. And that's without getting into Canada and Mexico. South America I'm thinking has a better organized wizarding community. Although suggestions on how this should be explained would be great. I'm kinda stuck on that.

Anyway to my thought on why Harry has trouble is because in him two very important and powerful bloodlines are mixing. The Potter bloodline is pretty much what you would expect from a pureblood English family. However it's the other two bloodlines that are the source as it were. Pretty much through John, he's of direct line descendant of Merlin, and through his mom he's of direct line descent of Mordred (You guys should know who I'm talking about) Pretty much he's actually the first time that the two bloodlines have actually mixed.

Pretty much the lines are mixing and some abilities that haven't been seen for a long time are being kicked up. And Harry, as well as the Winchesters they know the Arthurian legend, but they don't worship it the way that wizarding England seems to, so they wouldn't see what the big deal is.

Tell me what you think on any of the idea's I've outlined here, as well as any suggestions on how they should find out.

Interesting thought.

Though the idea of Mordred of all people procreating is nauseating

While it is good to be proud of your heritage

The way I see it Mordred had a very sucky position. He was pretty much the Harry of his time, being pushed into being a champion and weapon for one side, only it just happened to be the bad guys that had him. I'm actually planning on having Mordred rather sympathetic. He was raised in a snakes den the likes of which no Slytherin could hope to imagine, and he had no choice about what to do with his life.

Harry actually found a way out. Hmm... actually having Mordred show up... that could be interesting. He would probably scare the crap out of the Death Eaters let alone the other two sides of the power triad of wizarding England.

*snickers* I think I just figured out how to. Pretty much he helped Sirius escape from the veil (which leads to where Avalon and Camelot are) and came with him. And Sirius didn't find out who he was until they where out.

I like the sound of this. As for the better organization in south America thing, well they were colonized by Spanish and Portuguese mostly and the people in charge were the kind to get homicidal when crossed. Also they didn't get the same influx of 'I don't like that I can't do what I want, how I want, when I want, I'm going to a continent with less stupid rules' pissed off people.

A very good example about how history is written by the victors and the fact that Arthur became known as one of the Champions of Christianity and Mordred was a Champion of a religion that was destroyed by it then it is very likely that he would be seen as a bad guy. The way I see it if this was true then Merlin either betrayed his culture and religion or was tricked into binding himself to Arthur...

An alternate to how Mordered brings back Sirius would be that Sirius is Mordred's reincarnation and by stepping on the shores of Avalon all his various lifetimes of memories are returned to him as Oberon's geas on the reincarnation was meant to break when he found his way back...

Personally I would add Puck to the Potter line as the Fey would make such a more interesting ancestor than a stuck up Merlin or some founder of a school...

Hmm, as to South American what if the Maya, Inca and Aztec cultures were instead of destroyed used a spell that could copy their entire civilizations like an alternate Fidelus Charm instead of the secret no longer existing the secret is placed in a sub-reality. Their magic is advanced enough that they are able to have early detection of magical beings on their continent and offer them the ability to join their culture. The thought is that the three cultures create a triumvirate of government systems that has maintained peace for centuries. Unlike the Fidelus their charm would be based on human sacrifice hence the reason why they would not do it again but the charm does allow for expansion on that which is already held in that pocket dimension(so that their civilizations would very well be much larger than what they were centuries earlier).
They would have four schools: One "Manqo Qhapaq"(language of the Incan's for 'Splendid Foundation' who was the first ruler of Cuzco the Incan Capitol who was a deity in some myths) which would be a Spiritual school(where students learn the history and rituals of all three cultural roots including those of political and medicinal region of studies) Two "Itzcoatl" (Fourth Elected emperor of the Aztecs that would form the Triple alliance and begin the expansion via conquest of the Aztec empire) a Battle school (for both external Military and internal police force), Third one "Pacal Institute" (means "Shield" in Mayan but it is in reference to Pacal the Great a ruler of one of the smaller city states, Palenque, but was known for initiations that created some of the greatest works of Mayan art and architecture) an Artisan School (architecture to weapon craft to weaving and bead work), Fourth would be the Amazonian Agrarian School (a very selective school that studies methods needed to maintain their civilization including what efforts need to be done to expand the pocket realities so that they could continue thriving). The thought is that the schools would teach well rounded educations but they would be acknowledged the better ones for their fields.

The other thought that I have is a Caribbean school in Hell, Grand Cayman, maybe a Military Style Academy but more in the Spartan tradition where if you fail then your dead and you only fail by dying, give it a slight mortality rate but make it so that if you graduate you are acknowledged as among the magical military elite. Telling any one the line 'I have survived Hell and am better for it' would ensure that they take what you say seriously and if you are their enemy that they better give their all if they have any hope defeating you.

Sorry for expanding the thoughts so far but I sometimes can't help going off on tangents,

Sound really plausible. A lot of people forget how -big- the US is. I live in Texas, one of the largest states, although not the largest, and it takes about 1.5-2 days to drive from the top of the panhandle to Houston (admittedly some of that is the roads don't go strait there). Houston isn't even the southern most point. One of my friends' families lived near Brownsville and it took her 16hrs on a bus to get home from school from the middle of the state. I have no idea how long it takes to get from Tyler to El Paso. I know it's more than a day, but how much more, *shrugs*.

> Okay, does that make sense? About the wizarding situation in the US

It makes sense. Maybe you could follow how other immigrants set up their communities after moving here? If you think about religion (if only for the model) immigrants moved here, worked, saved, and as a community brought over Priests/Ministers/Rabbis etc. Then they brought over relatives, then set up a church/school. Each group set up a little bit of home in the new world (in the US). The US doesn't have a national religion. Nor do we have a national school system. We have national standardized tests (ACT, SAT, etc.) and States do have to meet national standards, but the States have individual tests for graduation. Following that train of thought, if wizards from India came here, they would set up their own temples and own schools (probably following or mimicking Indian schools), the Germans moving here would set up the same way, the Italians, the Irish, the English, and so on, and so on, including local governmental bodies (like a local Council of Wizards). So the US might or might not have a national Department of Magic (if we did it would likely be in the Department of the Interior). Individual matters would likely be left up to each state, as long as some basic standards where met. There would be agents that handled magical crimes too, at the Local (Aurors), State (State Aurors), and National (Magical Agent/Military Mage-for each branch) level. Magical schools would be set up as private schools, but here's the kicker, even private schools in the US have to meet Public School standards. So a Hogwarts type school would be shut down because it doesn't teach the core classes: English (8 yrs worth), Math (General two yrs, Algebra I & II & Geometry each a yr), Science (Natural, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Health, Political, Computer, Psychology, Social most 1-2 yrs), Physical Education (at least 1 class a yr), History (State-1 yr, National- 2yrs, World-1 to 2 yrs), 2nd Language (@ least 2 yrs), Art (Music, Choir, Art, Band, Orchestra-at least 2 yrs). Also you have different qualification to get into private schools, and different methods of teaching. I think any reasonably large population would have several magical schools, but they would be small and picky about who got in.

He descended through Nimue (an Elemental or Fae)?

> Mordred

And who, a Fae (green eyes)?

Doesn't this support the Pureblood reasoning? I think that magic seems to be genetic in some way in Potter 'Verse, but to that extent? To have 'gifts of the line' show up 1000+ yrs in the future just because someone marries someone's descendant? I'll grant it may make the child more powerful because genetically they can call handle control more power than someone else because of a genetic predisposition. I'll even grant if a gift was kept active for that time, maybe skipping a person here or there, it could show up. But huge gifts after so long with no one else having them? In order to do that wouldn't they have to be 'awakened' or 'endowed' from someone else? Example: Harry speaks Parseltongue because Voldemort speaks Parseltongue AND Harry is a descendant from the brother of the ancestor of Salazar Slytherin (quite confusing, no?) -> Harry and Voldemort shared the genetic/magical capability to speak to snakes through a common ancestor. Voldemort empowered Harry to use his previously dormant 'gift' when he tried to kill him, thus awakening Harry's abilities. Conversely, it seems Harry could lose the ability if Voldemort chose to retrieve it (interesting point, hum?).

John and sons can do magic. The ability is inherent in them - like wizards. If John was taught at home because his parents couldn't afford magical schooling for him, it would be reasonable for him to teach his sons the same way in the same circumstances. Also it would perhaps preserve 'family magics' that would otherwise be lost. If a family shows skills in an area that requires work and training to master (wandmaking, accurate divination/foresight, exorcisms) they could be lost due to a child being orphaned, or having a child in a standardized school setting. It's the same reasoning that goes behind separating school children by ability resulting in Magnate schools and some schools specializing in certain subjects.

True. Arthur had at least three older half sisters. Elaine (which means something like bright light), Morgause (which means something like Sea's grace), and Morgana (which means something like Powerful Sea). Morgause bore Mordred(something like Sea's Warior). I'm sure you can see a trend in the names. It reminds me of the Gaunts and several other wizarding family naming trends. It could be that the older children came from a union with a wizard, and Arthur come from a union to a normal it could fit well with your story.
